During 2017-2018 academic year, the number of ACGME-accredited GME programs increased by nearly 5.5% from the prior year for a total of 10,909, according to a survey co-sponsored by the American Medical Association and the Association of American Medical Colleges. Since 2012-2013, the number of GME programs has increased by more than 16%.

Directors of all ACGME-accredited programs were asked to complete the survey and their responses, which included educational characteristics of their programs, were added to the AMA’s Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database Access (FREIDA Online).

Directors were also surveyed about their trainees for 2017-2018 and asked to confirm or modify their training status and confirm, add or modify their demographic information, such as gender, citizenship status, birthdate, and race. The total number of residents increased 5% to 130,545 from the year prior.
