The matching rate for graduating medical students and residency programs reached more than 95%-- the highest rate in 30 years, according a press release from the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

A record 38,377 applicants sought one of 26,772 available residency positions during the main matching portion of the week. All unmatched applicants and programs participated in the inaugural Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP) segment of Match Week, which streamlines and equalizes the process known as “Scramble” to fill all vacant residency positions.

About 1,000 medical students matched during the SOAP process. A record number of couples (848) also matched this year. To see a breakdown of matching positions by specialty, click here.
