CMS announced last week that ICD-10 is a go, and hospitals better get ready. Despite rumors of possible delays, the organization addressed some of the myths regarding the transition in its April 23 ICD-10 newsletter, stating

“The government, payers, and large providers alike have made a substantial investment in ICD-10. This cost will rise if the transition is delayed, and further ICD-10 delays will lead to an unnecessary rise in health care costs. Get ready now for ICD-10.”

We understand—the transition to ICD-10 is scary, and it’s going to shake up a lot of CDI departments. There will be new codes to master, added specificity in documentation, and more pressure on physicians to get certain turns of phrase in the record correct. Which is why we decided to launch a new series on the ACDIS blog—an ICD-10 Tip of the Week.

We will be rolling out new tips and tricks every Friday to help ease the transition to ICD-10, gathering the best of the best advice from ACDIS and HCPro publications and expert sources.

Our first post focused on physician education, something many CDI programs struggle with, even without the added pressure of a new code set. We hope you will use these posts as a resource for your CDI department, and start preparing now if you haven’t done so already. Use our many products and resources to get the training and help you need to successfully switch to ICD-10.

Read the first post in our ICD-10 Tip series, “Prepare your physicians.”

If you are currently in the process of updating your physician queries and education in light of the new code set, consider donating your materials to the ACDIS Forms & Tools Library. To do so, email Associate Director Melissa Varnavas mvarnavas@acdis.org.
