In less than a month ACDIS kicks off the first ever Clinical Documentation Improvement Week celebration September 18-24. CDI Week was developed by a group of ACDIS volunteers to help CDI specialists increase public awareness of the CDI profession and to recognize and celebrate the unique skills and accomplishments of CDI staff members.

ACDIS will distribute a CDI industry survey to kick off the week, and each day ACDIS members will receive a special Q&A report which highlights several areas of professional concern.

There are a number of tools already online to help you and your organization plan CDI Week celebrations including:
  • CDI Week logo
  • CDI Week promotional poster
  • Educational PowerPoint presentations
  • Media kit to help you communicate with your local newspapers and elected officials
  • Sample of suggested CDI Week activities
Last week ACDIS launched a line of paraphernalia in time for CDI Week events. All the items cost between $10 and $30 and can be used during your CDI department open house or education session, as raffle items during a special CDI presentation, as welcome gifts for new physicians or CDI team members, or as morale boosters for yourself and your CDI team. There are a total of six different items, two of which are tee-shirts. One is a purple v-neck with the ACDIS logo and the other is a gray v-neck with the CDI Week logo on it. Other items include: a water bottle, a coffee travel mug, a tote bag, and a mouse pad, all with the CDI Week logo on them.

ACDIS members have been sending in details of their CDI Week celebration plans. For example, Nancy Ignatowicz, RN, MBA, CCDS, System Manager of Clinical Documentation for Provena Health in Frankfort, IL, plans to distribute a letter to physicians which introduces the CDI program and includes a photograph of the CDI team. She also developed a CDI team placemat which includes helpful documentation tips arranged around her CDI team photo. Check the ACDIS Blog to download these donated materials and adapt them for your own use.

There will be a number of CDI Week give-a-ways sponsored by ACDIS, also. For example, we will post a new CDI-related cartoon to the ACDIS Blog each day. The first five people who post clever captions for these cartoons will win a prize. Additionally, we invite CDI professionals to share their success stories with their peers. E-mail ACDIS Director Brian Murphy at bmurphy@cdiassociation.com with a two or three paragraph description of a department goal you reached, a difficult physician you won over, or a team building event you created. A number of prizes will be given for the responses.

Finally, one last idea to contemplate as you and your CDI peers prepare to celebrate your profession. Members of the California ACDIS Chapter are hosting a number of “after-hours” events all over the state. There will be one on Wednesday, September 21, from 5-8 p.m., at the Clement Street Bar & Grill, in San Francisco, one on Friday, September 23, from 5-8 p.m. at the Yard House - Paseo Colorado in Pasadena, and tentative plans are in the works for another event in Ontario. Consider reaching out to your local ACDIS Chapter leaders to help them organize a few similar events in your area or reach out to other facilities in your vicinity to plan a post-work get-together. If you do set a date for an event let us know by e-mailing Melissa Varnavas at mvarnavas@cdiassociation.com and we’ll help get the word out by publishing it on the ACDIS Blog and social networking sites.
