The AMA has significantly changed musculoskeletal system codes pertaining to soft tissue and bone tumor excisions. The new and revised codes categorize these tumor excisions by tumor size and level of depth. The new codes define the size of the tumor excision.

The codes include the main part of the procedure, access, exposure, and resection. They also include simple or intermediate-level closure of the wound. However, the codes do not include complex wound closures, such as tendon reconstruction or extensive neurolysis.

This tip is adapted from “2010 CPT: Tumor excisions, facet joint injections among most significant changes” in the February issue of Briefings on APCs.
